I happen to love Vera Bradley. Like a lot. So when I saw the sarongs in a Vera Bradley outlet store my DIY brain went into a frenzy trying to decide all the great things I could make out of them. Originally i was going to tack one onto a duvet cover, but then the new comforter set came out in Midnight Blues and I couldn't resist it. So I needed a new idea and decided on drapes! The window in the family room of my apartment isn't very big, so I was able to turn one sarong into two curtains that fit my window perfectly! Wanna make your own? GREAT cause I have instructions just for you!
materials:
1.) Vera Bradley Sarong or Sarongs depending on the size of your windows: available here or by calling or visiting a Vera Bradley outlet: you can find more information on outlets here. Outlets often have better prices than online and you can order over the phone, shipping is $8 for as much as will fit in a pretty large box!
2.) coordinating ribbon to make the loops for the top
3.) due to my apartment regulations all things hanging in windows visible to the street must be white, so I used the flat sheet from a white sheet set I bought, but if you don't have such restrictions you can use any color fabric for the back, which might look better than mine, because a lot of light shines through and dulls the vibrant colors. So thicker backing might be better.
4.) scissors, pins, sewing machine and thread.
Step #1
Step #2
Depending on the measurements of your windows this might not be a step you need to do, but i then cut both the sarong and the backing fabric in half, this is how I turned one sarong into two curtains, but if you have taller windows, you may need to use two full sarongs.
Step #3
Step #4
Step #5
Fold your ribbon piece in half and place the it in between the two layers of fabric, the open part of the ribbon loop should be in line with the fabric, and the loop part should be at the bottom. Pin in place. do this along the whole top of the sarong. If you cut your sarong in half, you should be putting the ribbons along the cut edge. Now for this sarong, there were really nice places on the fabric itself to evenly space the ribbons, so i didn't measure the distances. If you use one of the other patterned sarongs, you'll have to do a little math to figure out how to space your ribbons.
Step #6
I don't have a picture for this step because I was trying to work really fast to avoid having dogs or cats walking all over my project, but you are going to want to pin the rest of the edges of the fabric together, all the way around.
Step #7
Now starts the sewing. You will be sewing the two layers together a lot like you would make a pillow. so start on one of the sides, and sew, then leave the needle in the downward position and turn the corner, sew that side, and repeat until you get a few inches from where you started, and don't sew it all the way closed or you won't be able to turn it right side out.
Step #8
To finish it up, turn your curtain right side out, push all the corners out with a pencil, or other pointy object, then hand sew or machine sew the hole you left for turning. Now repeat all these steps with your other curtain, and you are done and can hang them up!
Step #9
Hang up your beautiful, colorful, new curtains, and watch as people marvel at your new creations. True Vera Girls will be in awe and exclaim how they never knew Vera Bradley made drapes!
*This was an original idea of mine, please do not copy without crediting my blog. That being said I would love to see people make them out of all of the other available patterns!
