The ham shank

On Thursday, Tony and I bought a ham shank.. I haven't bought one in a very long time and this looked huge. It cost the princely sum of £3 and has made the most gorgeous pan of broth. I added a couple of carrots., three bay leaves, a large spud, two medium sized leeks and a large onion. I chucked in a couple of vegetable stock cubes and a load of pepper that I ground up in my pestle and mortar.  We had some for lunch with a big chunk of warm ciabatta and the rest is for tomorrow's tea.  I have cut all the meat from the bone and it will make some very tasty sandwiches for Tony's packed lunches next week.
It's been a glorious blue sky and sunshine kind of day and we have done loads in the garden. We hadn't expected such lovely weather so didn't really have any plans for today. It was great to be able to cut back the ivy that was taking over one corner of the garden. It was starting to damage the fence and has huge trunks the size  of small trees.  Or perhaps I should say it had huge trunks. Tony has sawn them down and we have pulled as much as we could from the fence.
Tomorrow we are meeting our friends Ken and Elaine for a late breakfast so I will leave Tony have a  good sleep in... he earned it today.
