The Accidental Tourist: Lawrence Kasdan

The Accidental Tourist is a film of insurmountable loss and the hungry desire to find solace in companionship.  It has humor, but isn't a comedy.  It has sorrow, but isn't a tragedy.  It is a steadfast reflection of life in all of its many incarnations.  Macon Leary spends his days cramped into airplanes and cheap hotels all over the world.  He writes travel guides for the smart traveler.  But he seems oddly detached from the world.  This is because one year ago, his 12 year old son was murdered by a robber during a stick-up.  Macon drifts away from his wife to discover Muriel Pritchett, a local dog trainer, who fills a gaping hole in his life.  Does he love her?  Maybe.  But Macon desperately needs her to help return his life to some form of normalcy.  This is a soft, warm film of human relationships that serve as shields against the ravages of life.  It takes its time, working slowly, yet surely, developing it characters.  Yet somehow, watching it isn't a tedious or tiring experience.  We see ourselves in Macon's shoes.  We have all felt indescribable pain.  If we are lucky, we find our own Muriel Pritchett to help us face the day again.
